I will keep traveling

As a little girl, I saw many people from other countries exploring my city, Iquitos. From that moment I knew that at some moment of my life, I wanted to dedicate myself to explore other worlds.

At 18, I made my first "solo" trip, but the truth is that when one travels, we are never alone. The only thing that happened to me on that trip was that I wanted to travel more. I returned to Peru and started from home, thanks to my work I spent a good time going around Peru, sometimes alone, sometimes with girlfriends and sometimes with boyfriends. I met amazing people, I learned how others live, I saw the world from different heights, colors, temperatures. I found ideologies, religions and very different stories to different mine. Every trip I brought inspirations, lessons, and adventures, each trip brought a renewed Allegra.

When you travel the known and unknown world, as a woman I always have to be alert. I have to keep my guard up because I don't know when a man will want to harm me. I remember on a bus from Barcelona to Bilbao an Italian man tried to pull up my blouse while I was sleeping. In Morocco 3 men followed me for half an hour, in Hungary, a taxi driver told me that I was beautiful and I should postpone my trip to stay at his home.

In those three times, I was afraid of those men and I feared worse things could happen to me during the trip. However, what I was afraid the most, was letting these men stop my dream and my desire to keep on learning from other worlds.

Now more than ever, I thank my luck, I appreciate that I'm safe and alive. I know those experiences were not the determinants of my trip. In my case good overcame evil.

However, next time I travel I will, still, have to be alert and as a woman, I will, still, run more risks. Is 2016 and I will, still, think that because television continues to reduce the existence of a woman to her body, because in politics women are still a minority and above all, because we still keep teaching our daughters, sisters, and girlfriends, they must keep their guard up to not get raped, instead of teaching our sons, brothers and male friends not to be rapists.

I will keep traveling with my guard up, because I refuse to stop traveling, because learning about the world is my right and because as a woman is my responsibility to show we are out there, more independent and more adventurous. I will keep traveling.

I always liked letters because of the wait and the surprise of knowing that something is coming, but don't know what it is. It was around  2006 I thought about a project, "Emilia's Letters", but insecurities, and prolonged laziness stopped me from doing it. It was in 2011 that I decided to do it and so I left the first letter.

What is it?  Basically I walk around leaving letters in the places I travel or visit or live. I don't have a routine of a letter a day, a week or a month, it's just when I have a secret a past or a joy I feel sharing.

It has been two and a half years and I have left very few letters, is just that sometimes you have to have time. 27 are the letters I have left in the streets and a 5 more with recipient ... Many got lost in the way, and then I never knew if any of the letters I left was ever found.

To the date I have left letters in Lima, Iquitos, Cajamarca, Tallinn, Helsinki, Turku, Budapest, Berlin, Paris, Barcelona, Valencia, Santiago de Compostela, Porto, Toronto, Ottawa and Khorbat. I have sent to Alicante, Porto, Barcelona, Seville and Helsinki to people out there who has found the blog and asked me if I would sent them letters. Hopefully this year  I get to send more than 12.
